And that's the end

Yehudah on Monday 30 Jan 2012 15:01:16

The first Internal Letter of Commentary on OSCAR has been posted. Baldric will remain live for archival purposes (at least, until/unless I come up with a good way to simply export things for reading), but no new letters of intent will appear here. Thanks to everyone who participated here over the years. We blazed a trail!

The Sun is Setting on Baldric

Yehudah on Monday 5 Dec 2011 10:12:43

Baldric -- the software that runs this site -- and OSCAR -- the society-wide commentary system -- were both born within months of each other. Each sprang from separate but similar impulses -- to cut down on the absurd amount of paper that circulated and modernize the entire process. While almost no code is shared between the two projects, Istvan and I have always bounced ideas and issues off each other.

Until recently, OSCAR was *only* usable for "external" submissions commentary. However, as of this week, OSCAR has finally been extended to include the ability to process kingdom internal letters of intent. The biggest bonus to doing it this way is that the submissions herald need only click a single button to create the EXTERNAL letter of intent and submit things for Society-level commentary.

While a specific sunset date has not yet been set, we will be moving internal commentary to OSCAR at some point, probably quite soon. I strongly recommend that all commenting heralds take a look at Oscar at http://oscar.sca.org, sign up for an account and get acquainted with the site.

More as it happens!

Search Tweak

Yehudah on Sunday 6 Sep 2009 09:09:32

It's simple, but profound. If you click "Search Submissions", you'll find there is now a "Search All Letters" checkbox at the top that should make global searches infinitely easier.

At long last...

Yehudah on Sunday 4 Dec 2005 18:12:36

'Northshield' appears as a possible kingdom on the user profile edit page. Yes, I'm a dope. This was a 5 second fix, and I only just got to it.

No December 2004 Letter

Yehudah on Friday 17 Dec 2004 10:12:27

Gabriel Compass informs me that there is no business for a December Internal Letter.

A Note about Commentary vs. Administrivia

Yehudah on Friday 23 Apr 2004 11:04:55

Please note that responses posted here to items in letters of intent should directly involve the content of the submission. Administrative issues or questions about the the status of a submission should be directed to Keythong and Compass, or possibly to Polaris, depending on their nature.

Baldric in Sourceforge

Yehudah on Wednesday 25 Feb 2004 13:02:52

For those of you interested in the software behind this site...

If you have programming savvy and want to help, or are just interested in tracking the development of the software that runs this site, the Baldric project is now living on SourceForge at http://sourceforge.net/projects/baldric/

Bug tracking is sticking with Flyspray for now,but will probably move over to SourceForge? soon.

Testing

Yehudah on Monday 23 Feb 2004 21:02:48

Playing with a text formatter

OK. We're using a new text formatter -- something I've wanted to put into place for some time so that people didn't have to learn raw HTML.

The downside is that it's one of the other -- in order to have 'safe' text that cannot, either maliciously or accidentally, contain 'dangerous' HTML code, the text formater has to pretty much strip out HTML. I can turn that part off, I think, if I have to, but I'd rather not.

This means some older comments may look odd. I apologise for this bit of growing pain. Update I'm going to go and try to fix what's in the February letter so it's not too hideous.

Update 2 I've changed my mind -- re-editing all of them is a pain. I've edited a couple just to make sure things work. I'm going to take out the rule that filters out HTML for now. However, when March commentary begins, the rule goes back in.

Please play with things. Reply to this message and use it as a sandbox.

Status time stamps

Yehudah on Tuesday 30 Dec 2003 13:12:41

Status changes are now timestamped, and history saved.

When item status changes from 'Open', it will now get a 'status stamp' that will be displayed with the new status, e.g. 'Sent to External, 12-30-2003...'. Older letters whose status was changed before this will all have 12-30-2003.

In addition, the history is saved off, so eventually (not yet) it will be possible to click and see an audit trail of the status changes.

Beta One!

Yehudah on Tuesday 16 Dec 2003 23:12:27

The Northshield Heraldic Commentary Site is now at Beta One.

What does this mean?

It means that all the basic structure is in place to allow letters to be posted, items to be commented on, and, after decisions made, have their statuses updated.

In the coming weeks, I'll be adding:<ul>
<li><strike>Search/Browse by status</strike><span style="color: red">Done!</span></li><li>E-mail notification of updates</li><span style="color:red">70% done!</span><li>User interface cleanups</li>
</ul>Please use the bug-report link at the bottom of the menu to report bugs and request features!

New Stuff

Yehudah on Wednesday 12 Nov 2003 17:11:49

There's now an About/Rules page (see Menu). This text will now also get displayed when people go to create a new account. The page is very, very rough (based on a draft provided by Moraig), but it gets the basics across, I think. There's also a Browse Profiles option that will allow you to see who else is here.

Upcoming Features

Yehudah on Wednesday 12 Nov 2003 16:11:37

Things to watch for:
  • Items that tell you how many comments they have Done!
  • E-mail notification of new items/comments
  • Searching Partly done!
  • Password/confirmation-request regeneration Done!
  • Invisible giraffes

Let's try this again!

Yehudah on Tuesday 4 Nov 2003 21:11:14

Update, Thursday 6 Nov 22.34: We're really, honestly, officially alpha. For the first time ever, someone other than myself successfully created a user id, went through confirmation and approval, and gained posting privs. Scary stuff!
Welcome to the Northshield College, Alpha Two. I'm going to try to get October's letter in for test data. Stand by! :-)
